|Power Attack||You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a 50%) if you are making an attack with a two-handed weapon, a one handed weapon using two hands, or a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (–50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.|
|Mounted Combat||Once per round when your mount is hit in combat, you may attempt a Ride check (as an immediate action) to negate the hit. The hit is negated if your Ride check result is greater than the opponent’s attack roll..|
|Armor Expert||As part of his initial training, Hyron taught Varcham a bit about Dwarven armorcraft, namely proper maintenance techniques and the fitting and wear of both armor and undergarment to ensure maximum flexibility while retaining all defensive benefits of heavy armor.||When you wear armor of any sort, reduce that suit’s armor check penalty by 1, to a minimum check penalty of 0.|
|Natural Born Leader||Soon after joining Redwater, Varcham became the prime instigator of many of its escapades. He was able to keep himself out of trouble with the local guard even as he convinced other kids to engage in mischief. The event that led to his arrest was a display of bravado intended to inspire even greater mayhem among his fellow Reds.
His time in the stables taught him how to apply this ability to animals under his lead, and he has continued to use this trait now that he’s on the right side of the law to inspire confidence in both his allies and his mount.
|All cohorts, followers, or summoned creatures under your leadership gain a +1 morale bonus on Will saves to avoid mind-affecting effects. If you ever take the Leadership feat, you gain a +1 trait bonus to your Leadership score.|
Varcham is the middle son of Eskanod Fellbinder, descendant of a long line of wizards.
Eskanod was disappointed when Varcham showed no talent in magic and herblore, but became downright shaken when Varcham started running with Redwater, a local street gang. After Varcham was caught and arrested for defacement of a barrister’s house, Eskanod quietly asked Hyron to help Varcham find a more useful outlet for his energy. Hyron saw that Varcham was becoming a fairly strong fighter and not beyond redemption, so he made tending the guard house’s stable part of Varcham’s parole conditions, and gave no hint that Eskanod had arranged this duty.
Varcham initially chafed against Hyron’s rules, but slowly realized he was enjoying his time taking care of the horses and the basic martial training Hyron and his men were giving him during their breaks. Varcham was amazed at how quickly his parole period came to an end and was disappointed when Hyron wouldn’t allow him to continue working at the guard house. Hyron surprised him, though, with passage on a boat going downriver and a letter bearing the seal of Vaterfjord, which he was to carry to the captain of the guard of Novus Spes.
Filarael Elmheart accepted her friend’s note and request, and Varcham was offered the opportunity to train as a mounted guard for the city. After eight years as both trainee and commissioned guard, Varcham has returned to his hometown eager to help Hyron and to show his father the validity of the path he has chosen.
